Bulk Military Confirmations Still on Hold in Senate

Senators Tuberville and Lee maintain block due to Defense Department policy violating the Hyde Amendment.

The Senate was unsuccessful in its effort to confirm military promotions this week after the Senate Rules Committee voted to advance 350 more military promotions to the floor for a vote. Senator Tommy Tuberville of Alabama has blocked the usual voice vote approval process due to violations of the Hyde Amendment by the Defense Department regarding the public funding of abortions for service members.

Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, a committee member, stressed the importance of moving military confirmations forward during Tuesday’s deliberations. “We need to get these military nominees confirmed ASAP for the sake of our national security,” the Senate majority leader said.

Senator Tuberville, who was joined by Senator Mike Lee of Utah in objecting to confirmation, has indicated a willingness to discuss solutions to the stalemate as his Senate colleagues have grown increasingly frustrated by the hold on bulk promotions.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Senators Tuberville and Lee as they stand against the public funding of abortions for military service members.
  • For wisdom for members of the minority party as they seek solutions to military promotions and confirmations.
  • For Pentagon officials to adhere to the Hyde Amendment and cease using taxpayer funds for abortions.
